WS3: Bioinformatics for bridging glycomics with other -omics

Organizers:

Frederique Lisacek (Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, University of Geneva) and Sylvie Ricard-Blum (University of Lyon, France)

Workshop Summary:

Motivation.
In recent years, several reviews (e.g., Aoki-Kinoshita 2013, Campbell et al. 2014) have described the landscape of glycoinformatics and underlined the diversity and the isolation of the corresponding resources. Notably, the lack of connection to other fields of biology is due to a strong focus on analytical chemistry and lesser emphasis on functional characterisation. As functional glycomic information increases, bridging with proteomics, metabolomics and interactomics may become real. This workshop is proposed as an opportunity to sketch the paths glyco-informaticians and bioinformaticians could follow to meet half-way.

Organisation.
A full day with 4 sessions:

  1. Morning sessions will include:
    1. The introduction of concepts of glycobiology and glycomics.
    2. The presentation of selected bioinformatics resources (analytical tools, databases and repositories) with a strong potential for bridging with glyco-bioinformatics.
  2. Afternoon sessions will include:
    1. More presentations on challenges in bioinformatics to connect glycomics with other –omics.
    2. A Round Table discussion on how to address the identified challenges and define the bridging options between glyco- and other –omics via bioinformatics (all speakers and attendees).

Target audience
Glycoscientists, biochemists, proteomicists, bioinformaticians and glycoinformaticians involved in an array of applications such as host-pathogen interactions, human health
