Zoo Basel

Tour 6: General Walk

A new study has revealed something surprising. Basel Zoo has a very high diversity of species living in the areas between its enclosures. They are not escaped animals, but Basel Zoo’s free-roaming species. Specialists recorded the diversity of the plants and animals that live between the enclosures in an unusual, pioneering study. 3110 small animal and plant species were verified, which is a world record. Such a wide variety of wild species has never been recorded before in any city parks or zoos.

You will walk across the zoo and get information about actualities, interesting insight stories, and – fresh air!

Tour 7: Elephants

“Tembea” - Elephants enclosure – out of Africa

Male elephant Jack (24) came to Basel Zoo on 11 May 2017 and moved into the “Tembea” elephant enclosure, which opened in March. Elephants are classified as endangered in the wild, which is why Basel Zoo supports a conservation project in Kenya. Everything in the new elephant enclosure is based on the topic of ‘movement’. As well as for the elephants, it is also home to brown rats, harvester ants, clawed frogs and various species of fish. The observation platform set up in front of the house offers direct views into the nests of storks, free-flying birds which have once again become native to the region. Nesting areas have been built especially for them within the elephant enclosure. Other native animals have also been kept in mind: summer and winter homes for bats have been created in and around the house, along with around 50 nesting facilities for native birds.
