Call for Workshop Proposals

The [BC]2 Basel Computational Biology Conference will feature a one-day workshop / tutorial session on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 as part of the official conference program.

The purpose of workshops is to provide participants with an informal setting to discuss technical issues, exchange research ideas, and share practical experiences on some focused or emerging topics in bioinformatics. A workshop should provide an interesting perspective on the cutting edge of a research field. It may or may not cover a topic that is also addressed in the main conference — if it does, it should cover the topic more extensively than the main conference does. Workshops may include any form of presentation such as talks or panel discussions. Previous sessions have covered, for instance, “Genomics for Non-Model Organisms”, “Education in Bioinformatics”, or “Annotation and interpretation of mutations”. Organizer(s) of a workshop will be fully responsible for the workshop’s scientific content: they may invite speakers or call for submissions or combine the two options.

Workshops are scheduled on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, from 9:00 to 17:00, with a lunch break and two coffee breaks.

Proposal Submission

Proposals should not exceed 2 pages and should include the workshop description (motivation, organisation, possible speakers, relevance to [BC]2, possible references to similar initiatives, expected audience), specify the selection mode for contributions (invitation, call for submissions) and provide information regarding organizers.

An evaluation committee will consider the following criteria in assessing proposals: relevance to [BC]2 attendees, expertise and experience of the organizers and lecturers, effectiveness of the proposed organization, completeness, as well as clarity and quality of the proposal. The likely success of the proposed workshop will also be taken into account.

Please submit proposals in PDF format to <bc2-conference@unibas.ch>.

Logistics

[BC]2 will help in the administrative aspects of assigning the rooms, announcements and publication of the detailed schedule in the conference program, but cannot financially support the workshop speakers or organizers. [BC]2 highly encourages workshop organizers to seek independent funding for travel and accommodation, and to include any commitment they may have secured in the proposal. Each workshop will receive up to two free conference registrations for organizers or speakers.

Organizers of workshops are invited to prepare abstracts or additional written material that will be presented online at the beginning of the meeting. Organizers are also kindly asked to collect slides and reference material in PDF format from speakers, to be made available for download to meeting participants. Organizers are responsible for ensuring that the material they submit may be legally used and that appropriate copyright permissions have been arranged.

Workshop organizers are expected to operate within the context of [BC]2 procedures, including finalizing the program and providing material by the deadlines, working within the budget, etc. [BC]2 reserves the right to cancel a scheduled workshop if registration one month before the conference is less than 15 participants.
